Who is Flat Stanley???? Flat Stanley, also known as Stanley Lambchop, is the main character in a series of books written in 1964 by Jeff Brown. Stanley Lambchop's father gives he and his younger brother a bulletin board so they can post pictures and posters of places around the world. The bulletin board is hung by Stanley's bed but falls during the night and flattens Stanley, hence the name "Flat Stanley." When Stanley wakes up in morning and realizes he has been flattened by his bulletin board, he makes the best of his situation. As a result of his altered physical state, he is able to go places that most kids might not be able to go, i.e. locked rooms by sliding under the door, or being used as a kite by his younger brother. Stanley also was able to fit in envelopes and travel all over to visit friends.
In 1995, a man named Dale Hubert, a 3rd grade teacher from Ontario, Canada, created The Flat Stanley Project, to encourage letter writing. Students from various schools would sign up for the project, make Flat Stanleys, and then mail Stanley to other participating classes. These kids would then journal the activities that Flat Stanley participated in. What a great idea. Mr. Hubert received the Prime Minister's Award for Teaching Excellence in 2001 for the Flat Stanley Project.
