On October 10th, Aidan's class went on a field trip to the Gowan Oak Tree and Apple Farm in Philo. We got to ride in a big yellow schoolbus, and of course he chose the very last seat on the bus. It was a bumpy and winding ride, but the scenery was beautiful and the destination was full of fun.
The first item on our agenda was the pumpkin patch. Waiting for us was a man and his wagon (pulled by a John Deere tractor!). The class loaded up and off we went, down a dirt road that ran along the apple orchard, over a creek, along the corn field and finally to the pumpkin patch. Each student was able to pick one pumpkin to take home.
With so many pumpkins to choose from, it made the decision difficult for some. After about 15 minutes, it was time for a class picture, and back we went the way we came. .
Next we took a tour of the apple packing shed. The tour guide walked us through the warehouse where they wash, wax, sort and pack the apples. They actually run the apples through a soapy bath before spraying them with wax. Very interesting!
Finally it was lunch time. The Farm has a fruit stand for tourists and locals to stop and buy apples, vegetables, jams, dried fruit, etc. Next to the fruit stand is a play and picnic area. We all ate our lunch, then the kids got to play a bit, and then back on the bus we went. The trip back to school seemed to go faster than the trip to the Farm. Aidan slept and I visited with one of his classmates from last year. She got a kick out of my mp3 player. ;-)
